A Red Crossbill ( Loxia curvirostra) came into the yard for a visit today. It was quite pleased with the offerings at the bird feeders, particularily the Blackoil Sunflower seeds.

Those are unique birds, or more correctly,they have unique bills.You got a fantastic shot of this one.

Ruth, thank you very much! From what I understand the bill is used on pine cones and such to get the seed out!

Nice photo. I’ve never seen a Crossbill in person, just purple finches.

LadyBird, thank you! I’ve only seen one other Crossbill, a number of years ago, so it was a treat to have him come and visit our yard!
