Nature Through My Lens

Puffed Up

A pretty House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) On this cold day he was all puffed up against the cold. In the cold, birds puff up like this so the space between their feathers can be warmed by their body, keeping them warm. Just like a nice down filled coat!

He sure is bright.I am wondering if this is the normal color for House Finches in your area. The ones I see here are more into the orange.Still beautiful, but a different shade.

    • Ruth, thank you! We seem to get a variety of colours. I would say our predominant colour is the red. We also get anywhere from yellow to orange, but they are a bit rare. They are all beautiful though!
