A most handsome duck is the Mallard (Anas platyrhychos). He also is one of my favourite ducks! Wherever one goes there seems to be Mallards. Three Cheers or Quacks for Mallards!


On the Green Pond

A hen Mallard (Anas platyrhychos) preening her feathers! Preening is important to birds, especially birds like Ducks who have to keep their feathers ship shape to keep the cold and wet away!

A pair of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) on the side of a reasonably busy road. It seems they have made their Spring home in the ditch below. Both stood calmly while we drove by. I took the shot out the window of the car!

Here is yesterdays mate. A male Hooded Merganser. He has such a wonderful hood. Here he is an a golden hour pond. The movement of water and light and reflection interests me a great deal. This is a great example.
