In the Sun

A first winter White-crowned Sparrow has this perch in the bushes. Just perfect for taking five in the sunshine.

Sitting Pretty

On a cool, rainy day, this male Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna) was sitting on this branch close to the feeder and under cover from the rain.

Spotted Towhee

A Spotted Towhee.  For the most part these birds are very shy.  They generally are on the ground and keep under cover.  This one has been with us since fledging.  It’s finally got it’s adult feathers and is very handsome.  It has been around long enough that it will go on the feeders.  Here it’s on a tray with Niger seed.  This seems to be a favourite, for this guy anyway!

At Ease

IMG_0262.jpg

I haven’t had a Stellar’s for awhile. Here is one of our troop. We have five regulars that visit every day and relieve us of a bag of peanuts. A Stellar’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) or Scruffy, if you like!

In for a Bath

IMG_0093.jpg

Here’s a special visitor to our birdbath. Listed as Rare in this area, this Western Scrub Jay ( Aphelocoma californica) quite enjoyed its bath! Time for some suet and it was off again. We had it here a couple of time this past summer and I’m very pleased to see it back. Known to hang out around the Aldergrove Athletic Park. We are only a couple of houses from there!

Another with a Crown

A Golden-crowned Sparrow juvenile.  This little one had been on a feeder when someone bigger chased it onto the Cedar Hedge!
