Mallard

IMG_1075.jpg

A most handsome duck is the Mallard (Anas platyrhychos). He also is one of my favourite ducks! Wherever one goes there seems to be Mallards. Three Cheers or Quacks for Mallards!

Hmmm, Fancy That!

A hen Mallard (Anas platyrhychos) preening her feathers! Preening is important to birds, especially birds like Ducks who have to keep their feathers ship shape to keep the cold and wet away!

The Big Race

With the judge looking on the boys line up for the big race. George yells at Betty to get back in line so we can get the show on the road!

Tuckered Out

DSCN2400.jpg

A female fledgling House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) has had a busy day. Just new to this world she’s learning how to get around. But, all the activicty has worn her out and she has a little rest in a Hawthorne bush. That big thorn will definitely stop her from tipping to the right!

Who, Who Are You!

DSCN2577.jpg

A adult Barred Owl (Strix varia) came out to visit us along the edge of the trail on our afternoon hike. We heard that it was in the area, and we very lucky to see it! I’m pleased as it’s a lifer for me!

Nap

Geeseinarow.jpg

Somebody said “Nap” and they all agreed!  Except for the guy on the left.  He didn’t get the memo!  These Cackling Geese are standing on a submerged log.

The Cackling Geese are a subspecies of Canada Geese.  There was a large group of them on a local Pond.  Mixed in were a number of Aleutian Geese which are another subspecies.  The Cackling have small bills and a short neck.  The Aleutians are a bit large and have a white circle at the bottom of their necks.

A Stretch
