Here’s a Stellar’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) having a bad hair day, thanks to the wind! It’s sitting in our Empress tree. The brown objects are flower buds which have been on the tree all winter and will soon bloom in lovely purple flowers!
Early this morning a bunch of birds were perched in the branches of our Japanese Maple in our front yard. Here’s one of them, a Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla) This bird is a westerner. It ranges from Alaska to Baja. This one is considered a first winter bird. It’s also all puffed up due to the fact that the temperature was Minus 4 C.

Ice is the word today! After a night of freezing rain this American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) seems a little put out by it all! Can’t say I blame him!
